Start where you are. Stay consistent. Let yoga do the rest.
So you want to use yoga to lose weight—but you’re brand new and have no idea where to start?

Yoga can feel like a mystery when your goal is weight loss.
You might wonder:
“Do I need to do power yoga?”
“What if I can’t touch my toes?”
“How long until I see results?”
The truth is: yoga works- when you work with it.
Here are the top tips I give anyone starting yoga for weight loss, especially if you’re not into crazy workouts or crash diets. 👇
🧘♀️ 1. Pick a Style That Makes You Want to Show Up
Power yoga and Vinyasa are great for fat burn. But if you love gentle yoga, start there!
Consistency > intensity.
If I were starting my weight loss journey today, here’s exactly what I would gather:

- A pretty fitness journal to keep me accountable.
- A reliable, comfy yoga mat that doesn’t break the bank.
- A cute water bottle to make hydration fun.
🔁 2. Flow at Least 3 Times a Week
You don’t need daily practice, but you do need rhythm.
Three 30–60 min sessions per week is a great starting point.

💪 3. Don’t Skip the Strength
Chair pose, Warrior II, Plank, Boat—these build lean muscle that burns calories even when you’re sleeping.
🧠 4. Train Your Mindset, Too
Yoga helps you reduce stress, sleep better, and make kinder food choices. That matters just as much as movement.
🍽️ 5. Don’t Overeat Right After Class
You’re more in tune with your body—don’t override that with giant post-class meals.
Try hydration + something light and nutrient-rich.
⏱️ 6. Hold Poses Long Enough to Feel the Burn
Start with 20–30 seconds and work up to 45–60.
No rushing—progress is in the hold.
🧘♀️ 7. Start With Flows Designed for Beginners
Jumping into advanced classes too soon leads to burnout (or injury).
Go slow. Use props. Focus on your breath.

Yoga won’t make you drop 10lbs in 1 week. But it will change how you move, eat, sleep, and feel about yourself—and that’s what lasts.
You don’t have to be fit to start.
You just have to start.
